Problem
Grammar is traditionally taught through mechanical drills that do not help learners make a connection between the grammar form and its meaning. This results in learners regurgitating the grammar form again and again in a controlled environment with little to no ability to produce the form accurately and appropriately in real life.
Solution
To resolve this superficial acquisition of grammar concepts, I created a grammar lesson based on the principles of VanPatten’s processing instruction. This is a grammar instruction approach that focuses on input and meaning. This method promotes the acquisition of grammar in line with the mind’s natural processing strategies for a lasting understanding of concepts and subsequent use thereof.
